Victim Advocate

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced part-time victim advocate. As a victim advocate you will provide emergency services, information, personal advocacy and referral services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and ongoing development and delivery of community awareness and outreach efforts. Provide a safe and supportive environment for all shelter residents. Flexible scheduling to insure 24hour coverage of the shelter and perform other direct services as needed.

  • Interview victims to obtain case information and determine needs within 24 hours of contact with the victim.
  • Meet with victims to explain their rights and options such as Orders of Protection, Safe shelter, financial assistance, counseling, and crime victims’ compensation assistance. Provide crisis management and ongoing case management to victims.
  • Answers hotline calls and documents each in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Accompany the victim to any investigations, hearings, or court appearances if Court Advocate is not available.
  • Provide transportation to and from court for those victims in need of transportation.
  • Assist victims with secondary service providers as needed including financial assistance programs, Division of Family Services, housing authorities, medical providers and counselors.
  • Facilitate and publicize both men and women support groups for domestic violence/sexual assault on a weekly basis.
  • Submit monthly reports including, but not limited to grants, MOCADSV reports, service statistics, staff statistics, and progress on ongoing tasks.
  • Attend training programs by MOCADSV and others as appropriate and available including, but not limited to sexual assault and domestic violence trainings.
  • Seek community contacts to provide printed information and informational presentations to enhance awareness of services and recruit volunteers.
  • Recruits volunteers to staff the shelter when there is a client or respond to hotline calls for a 24/7 week.
    The duties listed are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in psychology, sociology, or social work preferred and work experience providing advocacy and/or support services for victims of domestic violence/sexual assault preferred. Previous experience as a volunteer or intern at NSAC or a domestic violence center.
  • Good documentation and record keeping skills.
  • An understanding of the issue of domestic violence and sexual assault and sensitivity to the plights of battered women.
  •  The ability to communicate both orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • The ability to work with people of various ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Willingness for flexible hours – schedule alternate hours with victim advocate and staff
  • A good sense of humor
  • Work as a team member, multi-task
  • Possession of a valid Missouri driver’s license with full time use of an insured car.
