MO-SART and SAFE Kit Initiative Continue Developing Statewide Response to Sexual Violence

Convened by MCADSV, MO-SART is a statewide team representing an interconnected network of providers and stakeholders collaborating on a statewide project to develop a comprehensive system of responses and ongoing care for sexual assault survivors in every Missouri community.

The SAFE Kit Initiative, launched by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office, is an effort to clear the backlog of untested sexual assault kits in Missouri by gathering an inventory, creating a tracking system, and eventually testing certain kits. The SAFE Kit Multi-Disciplinary Group meets quarterly to track the progress of the SAFE Kit Initiative, air concerns and questions regarding the initiative, and discuss next steps.

Both groups met recently to discuss implementation of the 2018 law that established requirements for sexual assault forensic evidence tracking, testing and storing. Though there is some stakeholder overlap in both multidisciplinary groups, the primary focus of each remains different. As both groups continue to meet there is a focus of balancing progress while also acknowledging there is still much work to be done.

MCADSV worked with several sexual assault nurse examiners and crime lab experts to develop videos explaining a sexual assault forensic kit and the role of a nurse examiner in working with a sexual assault survivor. By convening stakeholders in MO-SART, MCADSV continues to identify topics for training and future policy priorities.
