MCADSV gathers advocates and educators for Prevention Institute

MCADSV incorporates prevention strategies in all of our core services: education, alliance, research and public policy. As a coalition, we are motivated to be inclusive and unite others in social change. No one person, organization or sector can accomplish this work alone. With this in mind, MCADSV gathered advocates and educators from around the state on October 11th and 12th to participate in our inaugural Prevention Institute. This two-day training provided attendees the opportunity to learn the foundations of primary prevention, and practice engaging their peers in crucial conversations around facilitating primary prevention in their own communities.

Prevention is possible when communities are empowered to create safe and equitable environments for all, and facilitating conversations about preventing rape and abuse takes skill. We live in a culture where people don’t always know how to talk about sexuality and sexual violence, which can make recruiting stakeholders and coordinating community-wide prevention efforts challenging. Through a variety of skill-building activities, dialog, and action-planning, participants were able to assemble the resources they need to make change happen on the local level.

Preventing rape and abuse requires leadership and commitment. At MCADSV, we value the support of the Department of Health and Senior Services, Office on Women’s Health, and guidance from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center to make the Prevention Institute possible.
