Event: 2018 MCADSV Conference: Embrace the MOmentum
Date: Wednesday, 11-14-2018 at 11:00 AM to Friday, 11-16-2018 at 12:00 PM
Details: We are at a milestone in the movement to end rape and abuse. Critical conversations are happening
and courageous stories are being lifted into national dialogue. In all parts of Missouri, advocates are being recognized and called upon for our expertise. Although much work remains, our movement is aligning resources,
rallying allies, and embracing the momentum of social change. Now is our time to lead, learn and succeed. Join us.
Featured keynote speaker will be Vanessa Timmons, Executive Director of the Oregon Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. Vanessa has been a writer, activist, and women's health advocate for more than 25 years. She is a national speaker on resiliency and self-care for activists.
From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, MCADSV will host
two pre-conference workshops: People of Color Network Gathering and Creating a Shared
Vision for Campus Collaboration.
The People of Color Network Gathering will be facilitated by
MCADSV staff and our keynote speaker, Vanessa Timmons, and will be closed to
aspiring allies. Historically, the voices, experiences and expertise of people
of color in the movement to end rape and abuse have been overlooked. We want to
provide a space where people of color can come together to network and engage
in conversations about facilitating change and centering the work of advocates
of color in Missouri.
This lunch gathering is for conference attendees who
identify as people of color or as members of a culturally or ethnically
specific community. Our hope is that this gathering will provide next steps for
centering, building and sustaining the work of people of color in this
movement. Because we encourage and expect open communication, we ask that
aspiring allies be respectful of this space by not attending.

Creating a Shared Vision for Campus Collaboration will be
facilitated by staff from MCADSV, Partners in Prevention and the Department of
Health and Senior Services’ Office on Women’s Health. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention recommends partnerships between community stakeholders
as a way to create prevention efforts that will have a greater impact and be
more sustainable. Multi-sector collaboration is necessary in a comprehensive
approach to prevent sexual violence, yet collaboration can become stalled when
colleagues don’t always establish shared values and language for their work. As
part of MCADSV’s work with PIP and DHSS, it was identified that before
meaningful collaboration can occur, there must be a basic understanding of the
role everyone can serve in preventing violence. Participants will spend time
developing a message map to better identify how they can communicate their
messages to a variety of potential stakeholders.
Facilitators will provide an overview of a three-year
research project between MCADSV and Partners in Prevention, provide case
examples of collaboration from site visits with RPE-funded campuses and
practice creating shared messages for prevention policies and programs.
This lunch gathering is for conference attendees who have an
interest in prevention policy implementation and program development.
